Avalon is the one Los Angeles County city you cannot drive to. When someone is arrested on Catalina Island, they are processed at the Sheriff's substation at 215 Sumner Avenue, about 22 miles offshore, while the family is almost always on the mainland watching a ferry schedule.

Avalon contracts its police services to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, so an island booking is inside the county system immediately. The substation itself is small: it handles arrests and short custody, and it is not staffed like a mainland booking center. It is not a jail where anyone stays for long.

Whether a defendant is released from Avalon or transported to the mainland — and which mainland facility receives them — depends on the charge, the hour, and boat and aircraft availability. We do not publish a transfer timetable we cannot guarantee. Before a bond is placed we call the station and confirm where custody actually is.

There is no bail office on Catalina and no bondsman lives on the island. Mainland Transfer

Without a bond, custody continues on the mainland — commonly the Inmate Reception Center downtown for men and Century Regional in Lynwood for women. Timing depends on the charge and on boat and aircraft availability.

Release Or Court Transport

How To Post Bail At Avalon Station
